Is Norris Lake low in October?
Yes, Norris Lake runs low in October, about 10 to 13.5 feet below full pool at mid-month in every year from 2023 to 2026. TVA starts lowering the lake around Labor Day to make room for winter and spring flood water, and it aims for flood-control levels by January 1. So the color arrives while the lake is falling. Our Norris Lake guide explains the full cycle.
Here is what that looks like. The aerial at the top of this post shows the launch at Paradise Point, with yellow and orange hills above a wide band of bare bank. That is Norris Lake in the fall: bright hills and a lower shoreline. If you want a full lake, come in summer. If you want color and cool mornings, come in October and expect that shoreline.
Boaters should take extra care. When Norris is low, TVA has warned of more sandbars, exposed banks and submerged stumps. Towing a boat? Ask Kathy about the launch at that level before you come.
